Jan Middelkamp has a masters degree in exercise science and a PhD in health and exercise behaviour (change) at the Behaviour Science Institute of the Radboud University in the Netherlands.

He also is a board member of Europe Active (formerly EHFA) in Brussels. He published over 20 books, like:

• The state of research in the global fitness industry (2012);
• Member retention in fitness clubs (2013);
• EuropeActive retention reports (2013, 2014, and 2015);
• Essentials of motivation and behaviour change (2015);
• Growing the fitness sector through innovation (2016);
• Customer engagement and experience (2017);
• The transtheoretical model of behaviour change and exercise behaviour in fitness clubs (2017).

Career:
Jan Middelkamp (1969) graduated at the Academy of Physical Education (Bachelor Degree), Sports, Exercise and Health at Utrecht University (Master in Science Degree), and received his PhD in health behaviour change at the Radboud University. He started his career in the fitness industry as a judo teacher and was part of the Dutch National Judo Team for five years.

Later he became club and franchise manager at Fit-Care, one of the first franchise chains (22 clubs) in the Netherlands (from 1994). At the same time he was working at the HDD Group and was responsible for the introduction of Les Mills in the Netherlands and Belgium (from 1997). Jan Middelkamp became the COO of Fitness First in the Netherlands (from 2000) and opened 14 health clubs in three years. He returned to the HDD Group as a commercial director and shareholder (from 2003).

For three years he was COO and business development director at HealthCity/BasicFit International, a European health club chain with 265 clubs in 7 countries, responsible and managing 2700 employees (from 2006). He was the CEO of the HDD Group (from 2009 to 2014) and currently is the Development Director at HDD and CEO of BlackBoxPublishers.
