The Polytechnic Institute of Setúbal (IPS)

Portugal

The Polytechnic Institute of Setúbal (IPS) is a public higher education institution that is part of the polytechnic subsystem. The Polytechnic Institute of Setúbal (IPS) is among the seven national higher education institutions that have recently seen projects approved for the establishment of European Universities, transnational alliances funded by the European Commission starting on October 1, 2020. IPS is part of the consortium that applied for the E³UDRES² project (Engaged European Entrepreneurial University as Drivers for European Smart and Sustainable Regions), encompassing five more higher education institutions (HEIs), namely from Austria, Belgium, Hungary, Latvia and Romania. The global investment is around five million euros, from the Erasmus+ program, to be carried out over the next three years, with the aim of making partner HEIs true levers for the development of the regions where they operate.

The IPS emerged within the scope of the creation in Portugal of the new polytechnic higher education network in 1979, initially integrating the two schools located in Setúbal; the School of Technology (ESTSetúbal) and the School of Education (ESE). Currently, the IPS includes, in addition to these, three more Schools: the School of Business Sciences (ESCE), the School of Technology of Barreiro (ESTBarreiro) and the School of Health (ESS). There is also a sixth organizational unit, oriented towards student support: the Social Action Services (SAS), responsible for accommodation, food, psychological support and sports and recreational activities. As a public institution, the IPS has the State as its main financier, through the funds entered in the State Budget, which are complemented with its own income from tuition fees, research contracts and services abroad.

The Polytechnic Institute of Setúbal is a center for the creation, transmission and dissemination of science, technology and culture, intervening directly in the development of society and in the enhancement of human resources. As an entity, it naturally has legitimate intentions and aspirations for the future, the explanation of which can be an instrument of motivation and inspiration for its community. It aims to contribute to the sustainable development of society, in articulation with the social partners, through the development of training, research and development, knowledge and technology transfer, in the provision of services to the community and also the dissemination and promotion of science. and of culture.
